Ella Borsheim, a junior at Bellarmine Prep in Washington who has earned Foot Locker All-America cross country honors in 2019 along with placing second nationally in Nike Cross Virtual 2020 as well as finishing 19th at the XC Town USA Meet of Champions in November, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her competing in the 2-mile March 27 and mile race March 28 at the NSAF USA Meet of Champions at Douglas Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Borsheim reflects on her recently completed winter cross country season in Washington, which included three dual meets against Curtis, Peninsula and Gig Harbor, along with the South Puget Sound League 4A final March 20, when she clocked 17:54 in the 5-kilometer race and won by one minute to help Bellarmine Prep place second overall behind Gig Harbor by a 55-60 margin. She also expresses gratitude for her opportunity to compete for the first time at the high school level with freshman sister Ava Borsheim, who finished fourth overall at the SPSL 4A championship meet. Borsheim also revisits her appearance Feb. 27 at the second meet in the Sundown Track Series in Arizona, and running 10:29.67 to place third in the 3,200 meters. It marked her second trip to Arizona in the past year, including competing June 12-13 at the Desert Dream Last Hurrah, the last time Borsheim ran both the mile and 3,200 races at the same meet, clocking 4:50.32 and 10:29.49, respectively. She examines the depth of both lineups in South Carolina and her anticipation for running a competitive mile for the first time in nine months. Borsheim reveals that she has the desire to compete in additional out-of-state meets during the spring, including potential trips to Arizona and California for elite distance races, and shares how important it is for the mental health of both Ava and her to have these opportunities on the calendar after having the outdoor season last year canceled as a result of the pandemic.
